Bill C-543 a welcome alternative to Unborn Victims of Crime Act (C-484)

ARCC has just posted this brief explaining why the newly proposed members Bill C-543, “an Act to amend the Criminal Code (abuse of pregnant women) is a much better option than the existing Unborn Victims of Crime Bill, which opens legal pathways to affirm the personhood of a fetus (against the Supreme Court ruling that woman and fetus are one person) and punishing women/doctors who seek/perform abortions. I've already written about this problematic anti-choice bill here.

The last paragraph of the brief compares the goals of the two bills perfectly:
"Bill C-543 protects women, which was the stated goal of C-484, but it does not grant personhood to fetuses, which was the true goal of C-484. Anyone [who continues to] support C-484 instead of C-543 needs to acknowledge that they are not, and have never been, primarily interested in protecting pregnant women from abuse."
